Alberta Sales Tax

Alberta Sales Tax

Alberta does not have a provincial sales tax (PST), making it unique among Canadian provinces. Residents and businesses in Alberta only pay the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is set at 5%. This is significantly lower than in most other provinces, where consumers are subject to both GST and a provincial tax such as PST, Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), or Quebec Sales Tax (QST).

Alberta’s lack of provincial sales tax is seen as a competitive advantage for attracting businesses and residents. However, this also means that the province relies more on revenue from other sources, such as income taxes and oil and gas royalties.

This tax policy plays a role in Alberta’s broader economic strategy, aimed at fostering a business-friendly environment.
