The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the NWT Film Commission have announced a major expansion of the NWT Film Rebate Program, with annual funding increasing from $500,000 in 2024-2025 to $1 million starting in 2025-2026. The program’s updated guidelines streamline the application process and expand eligibility to include new project types like commercials and music videos. Projects that span multiple fiscal years may also receive multi-year funding.
Since its inception in 2015, the program has invested $1 million across 20 projects, generating over $8 million in direct spending and $11.6 million in total economic impact, equating to $8.90 in economic activity for every dollar invested. The expanded budget supports GNWT’s commitment to diversifying the economy and fostering a sustainable film industry that promotes local storytelling and creates employment opportunities. The new guidelines will take effect on December 1, 2024.
Minister Caitlin Cleveland emphasized the significance of these changes, expressing excitement about attracting diverse projects that will highlight the unique stories and landscapes of the Northwest Territories.
